Drivers Being Flagged Down

In a number of locations across the county over the last month or so, but in particular on the A340 at Sherborne St John (3 times we know of and another incident was at Knowl Hill, on the B3051 at Kingsclere), there have been incidents of Romanians (males and females) pretending to be broken down, run out of petrol, or having been involved in an accident (on several occasions one of them has been lying down on the verge as if injured).

They flag down passing motorists and are then quite aggressive (although to date not threatening violence) in asking for cash and offering cheap jewellery in exchange.

They usually have two vehicles, sometimes with a foreign registration.  The vehicles are usually described as 'boxy' looking, like old-fashioned Mercs or BMWs from the 70s, so probably are some form of foreign car.

On the Knowl Hill occasion a traffic unit did locate them but wasn't aware of the previous incidents, so took them at face value and just took details - they stated they were not residing in the UK but were visiting relatives … which was probably untrue, as the incidents have continued!

Advice is that if residents are concerned, to drive past and do not stop, then call the police.

Postal Scam

The following scam has been confirmed by Royal Mail and the Trading Standards Office are making people aware of it -

A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a Premium rate number) - DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam originating from Belize.

If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.

If you do receive a card with these details, please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655
